No one says it is only money that wins elections. If that were the case, the Tories would win every time. But we cannot win without it. Winning elections is done through getting our message across with our campaigns. Having the right message, but no means of communicating it, is having no message at all.

Winning back the voters we have lost will be a difficult task. This is despite a coalition intent on cuts hurting great swathes of the British people, particularly the poorest and most vulnerable. We must win them back by hammering home the message that there is an alternative. A Labour alternative that puts fairness at theheart of its programme as well as financial responsibility; not a policy that replaces one with the other.

We can only do this by campaigning vigorously and regularly. And we can only run these campaigns up and down the country if we have the money to pay for them. The Labour Party has at its core a group of supporters who are committed and generous enough to provide for it at a high level to enable this to happen. The Thousand Club was established to bring these people together. It is a tremendous resource, not just of financial support, but of ideas, talent and experience. We want to draw on this resource again and again over the coming months and years, and want you to be part of it.
