Our party is defined by our values and our determination to transform those values into change that improves the lives of the British people. But at the last election, the voters decided that they did not want us to continue pursuing that mission in government.
To win back their trust we need to do two things.
First, we must focus on people's priorities. For all the good we did in the last 13 years, by the end of our time in power we weren't listening closely enough to peoples' concerns whether they were about bankers’ bonuses or the benefits system.
I believe we need a leader who can listen to the British people to make sure we have this connection again.
Second, we must rediscover our sense of moral purpose. The Labour party is most effective when we understand that we are a movement dedicated to transforming our country. We should be proud of our values of equality, opportunity and responsibility and we should fight for them.
That means a leader who will match realism with idealism when it comes to making decisions for our party and our country.
That is the direction I believe will lead us to victory.
But I don't come into this contest with a blueprint setting out how to do it. I want to debate and discuss ideas with people in every part of our movement so we can together form a platform for the future. Find our more about taking part in that conversation at http://edmiliband.org/. That is how we will once again be where we want to be: leading Britain towards a more progressive future.
